The convicted criminal Adnan Syed of the 1999 Baltimore City murder appealed his sentence before the courts citing his legal counsel as ineffective. Syed's murder conviction and the circumstances surrounding is now the plot the phenomenal hit podcast entitled "Serial".
Syed's lawyer said he would call in a new witness to testify to his client's whereabouts during the time of the murder.
The court of appeals has granted Syed's request to call their witness Asia McClain, Reuters reported. In an affidavit, McClain swore that on January 13, 1999 she saw Syed at a library at the exact time the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee was committed. Syed and his lawyer hope McClain's testimony would steer the case to another direction.
"Serial" became an instant hit after local radio station released its podcast in October 2014. To date, millions of people including students began downloading it. The sensational podcast tells of the murder of the Baltimore student Lee and the conviction and imprisonment of her boyfriend Syed in 2000.
Meanwhile, with the phenomenal popularity of the podcast, a local Massachusetts high school picked "Serial" as their summer reading material to try out something new for a change of using a podcast instead of a traditional book.
"I was surprised because I figured we'd be reading a book over the summer. But it's a good change," a student told Boston.
