Who's afraid of the 2015 iPhones? Apparently, Samsung is and the South Korean tech giant is even advancing the release date of the Galaxy Note 5 to ensure that the result of the Note 4-iPhone 6 Plus tussle in 2014 is not reported.
The 6 Plus, the first phablet from Apple, won convincingly over the Galaxy Note 4 last year, according to BGR, despite Samsung's efforts of making its 2014 phablet flagship as one of the best, if not the best Android device during that time of the year. And what wounder Samsung's pride all the more is the fact that invented the phablet market and ruled the turf until Apple decided to upsize the iPhone.
The result: Apple posted its biggest sales in a quarter by selling nearly 75 million new iPhones at the close of December 2014. The feat was largely sustained in March 2015 as the tech giant again breached the 50-million mark and the same could happen again once the result for the June quarter this year is out.
While Apple went on a rampage, Samsung saw its profits decline and it has been the trend since the Galaxy S5 came out in early 2014. It appears as well that the same result will mark the commercial debut of the Galaxy S6, notwithstanding that experts and critics alike heaped praises on the S6 and more so on its prettier twin - the S6 Edge. Samsung's sales figures are not heading north.
For the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung is making sure that its second 2015 flagship will have a fighting chance and the company's strategy is to make the original phablet, on its fifth instalment, available way ahead of its upcoming rival - the iPhone 6S Plus that is.
Samsung is so afraid of the 6S Plus that according to The Wall Street Journal, the Note 5 will hit the market much earlier, likely by the third week of August. It seems that the move makes sense as the jumbo 6S Plus is not expected until late September or early October, giving the Note 5 the head start and sufficient time for Samsung to lure in phablet buyers just before the next iPhone takes the stage.
But will the gambit really pay off? It might but as noted by Business Insider, it is likely that the Galaxy Note 5 is designed, built and patterned after the Galaxy S6. That would mean the Note 5 is solid and gorgeous, somehow giving the device considerable edge but there is one notable downside.
Like the S6 before it, the Note 5 will likely lack a memory card slot for storage expansion, which is something about the S6 and S6 Edge that turned off a lot of Samsung fans. The same thing could happen to the Galaxy Note 5 that would offset the advantage it wants to enjoy in unpacking sooner than expected, Business Insider added on its report.
At any rate, an August 2015 release date for the Galaxy Note 5 is definitely much better for Android fans as unboxing the new Samsung phablet earlier is much better than having to wait for the gadget-crowded Berlin IFA trade show in September.
