Ferrari is recalling 814 of its United States cars for the discovery of another issue with airbags made by Takata Corp. The defect shows airbag may inflate the wrong way and may cause deadly accidents. The affected vehicles include 458 Spider, 458 Italia, 458 Speciale, 458 Speciale A, F12 Berlinetta, FF, LaFerrari models and California T.
Takata reportedly notified Ferrari in June for the issue. Airbag's recent issues are different from the previous reports in May where airbags spray shrapnel when exploded. This dangerous issue have caused six deaths already, Fortune reported.
Takata Corp. recalled over 34 million airbags, which is about one in seven cars in the U.S. It is the largest automobile recall in the country where not only Ferrari is involved. It expanded on about 16.6 million vehicles called for repair. This issue affected about 53 million globally since 2008, Reuters reported.
The issue did not clear whether markets outside the U.S. are affected. Pressured to agree to expand its recall due to U.S. regulations, Takata believes that the defect the automakers referring to was not officially recognized.
"We are pleased to have reached this agreement with NHTSA, which represents a clear path forward," Takata CEO Shigehisa Takada said.
Just like other automakers, Ferrari is just making sure they are producing safe and quality cars. Honda Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. were also reported to expand their recalls related to Takata airbag defects.
