With Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man" showing in theaters, the director has revealed that he and the production team has thought about releasing a standalone film, featuring Dr. Hank Pym as Ant-Man.
In his interview with Cinema Blend, Reed said that he and his team shot a sequence involving Pym as Marvel's tiniest superhero vestige. He said that while the scene was incredible, he felt that it was detached to the other sequences of the superhero film.
Reed explained that the initial plan was to start the film with a scene set in Panama, following Pym on a mission to secure a microfilm from a Panamanian general. He also compared the scene to a Bond film sequence, which was planned in the early drafts of the film authored by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish.
In Wright and Cornish's original "Ant-Man" draft, Pym's scene was set in the 1960 Cuba; however, it the setting was changed to Panama, as there was a swing in the timeline. In addition, this move aimed to preserve the historical accuracy of the film.
Reed's "Ant-Man" centered on Pym, passing on the Ant-Man suit to Scott Lang by means of heist. As per io9, this part of the story plot was taken from Wright and Cornish's initial film draft to become the core of the film.
While fans have known Paul Rudd as the man behind the costume that allows one to shrink his size at will by the name of Scott Lang, Reed said that it is still feasible for the original Ant-Man to have his own standalone film.
Michael Douglas is playing the role of Pym while Paul Rudd is playing the role of the titular superhero. "Ant-Man" also stars Evangeline Lily, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, Judy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Hayley Atwell, John Slattery, Stan Lee, Bobby Cannavale, and Anthony Mackie, among others.
