California-based technology company NVIDIA finally released the Android 5.1 upgrade to its Shield Tablet and Portable on July 23.
The release notes for the update were revealed and it was titled "Shield Portable Software Upgrade 103." One of the important aspects of the upgrade was that it has been marked "optional." The users of the handheld device are not being forced to update their device.
Another thing that the OS upgrade brings is that it allowed Google Play Books app to access the books that cannot be read before. In order to do that, the developers fixed the glitches causing the Google Play Books to block certain reading materials.
However, some of the applications were permanently removed. The apps that were eliminated were Android Browser, Expendable: Rearmed, and Sonic 4: Episode II. According to Engadget, these applications were removed because of compatibility reasons. The latest upgrade in the operating system caused the specific applications to encounter certain issues with the use of Android 5.1.
Aside from having an updated operating system, the developers also added support to Chromecast. This upgrade enabled Shield Tablet and Portable to become a source device for Chromecast or any Google Cast Ready device that will be connected to your television. Chromecast was developed by Google and the device can play both audio and video contents on an HD TV. In addition, the users have the option to directly stream the videos using Wi-Fi.
Nevertheless, there is another bad news for the users of the handheld device. The upgrade in Chromecast took away Miracast support, according to Android Beat. Miracast is a certification program of Wi-Fi Alliance based on the organization's Wifi-Display requirement. The program is allowing users to transfer 5.1 surround sound and 1080p HD video.
On the other hand, there is another noteworthy addition in the new software - Twitch app. The key feature of this application is that the user can view the streaming content of Twitch in landscape view and high definition. Users can also monitor their favorite channels as well as a chat with other viewers through the app's chatting feature.
Although NVIDIA said that the user can decide whether to upgrade or not, the update is necessary for those who wanted to check out the latest features of the Android 5.1. Nonetheless, the users who are willing to upgrade must also be prepared to sacrifice some of their treasured applications.
