Comments flooded K-pop media outlets after "Bad Blood" director Joseph Khan responded harshly to K-netizens on Twitter on July 23, Wednesday.
While various hallyu fans have previously speculated that the Hollywood director borrowed some of his music video's details from the 2NE1 song "Come Back Home," the negative interaction erupted on July 22.
Amidst the Taylor Swift-Nicki Minaj exchange of tweets regarding MTV Video Music Awards, a Twitter user uploaded a photo grid showing common details in the two futuristic videos such as three towers, body scanner, round glass cars, eye gears, and torch in a cave, captioned, "Can we talk about how Taylor's video isn't original and was copied from a group of four WOC, 2NE1."
Catching the tweet, website Jezebel posted "Come Back Home" and "Bad Blood" side by side and mentioned Swift's accolades, claimed the nine MVA nominations were undeserved and discussed Khan's Korean roots.
Quickly after the blog surfaced, the veteran director fired back. Khan tweeted. "Writer of Jezebel accused me of ripping off a Korean music video because I was born in South Korea. What the f-. Really?"
Khan proceeded with a series of tweets claiming that he had not listened to any Kpop song in five years because he was too busy with Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda". He concluded that he was the victim and he is officially famous. He said he trusts K-pop fans to be more rational. Finally, he called some people "Kpop conspiracists."
Khan's statements quickly reached South Korean forums and media outlets where he became a hot topic. Some Blackjacks agreed that he did not copy but called his statements rude towards his fellow Koreans. Others questioned him.
"5 years? Really? I'm sure you watched Gangnam Style," reads one comment in All Kpop.
On the other hand, when asked about the controversy, a representative of 2NE1's label YG Entertainment said in a statement, "I saw the oversea press releases and happened to stumble upon the issue among the stories regarding foreign artists but I have nothing to say."
Released in the summer of 2014, "Come Back Home" was deemed successful despite the competitive atmosphere at that time. It tells the story of a couple whose relationship was broken because the guy was addicted to gaming.
Globally popular for their edgy fashion and high-quality songs, 2NE1 is South Korea's second most popular Girl Group. K-poppers are currently excited for the quintet's upcoming comeback.
On the other hand, Swift's "Bad Blood" is a song about two former friends who relationship was destroyed due to loss of trust. Some blogs claim that it was about Swift's frenemy Katy Perry.
