Japanese electronics company Nintendo introduced the new concept of a non-wearable sleep tracker in 2014. Recently, the company has filed for a patent registration for a new technology that monitor its user's sleep pattern.
According to Clapway, the new device from Nintendo is part of the Quality of Life project which was spearheaded by the company's late president and CEO Satoru Iwata. The new sleep tracker is aimed to monitor its user while they sleep and the device should be able perform this task if it is installed right next to the bed.
According to The Next Digit, the sleep tracker can be docked on a station which charges the device at the same time. It has several sensors that can pick up data while the user is asleep. The sleep tracker is Nintendo's first venture into the market of devices aimed for health care.
Based on the patent application, the device records data that can be used in order to assess its user's emotional stance while asleep. Some features include a sensor that can capture the sound the user makes while asleep as well as images taken by the device's camera. Additionally, the device has sensors that can record its user's pulse, temperature and breathing rate.
In one of the device's diagram, it shows that the device looks like a traditional smartphone docked on top of a table while it displays information on its screen.
Nintendo announced in April that it is working with mobile app developer DeNA. This opens the possibility that the mobile developer might be the one responsible to develop the smartphone app for the sleep tracker.
Nintendo's sleep tracker is expected to be launched in 2016. Recently, the company has teamed up with ResMed which is a United States-based health company that develop and creates equipment aimed for the treatment of several sleep related disorder.
