Russia rejected the United Nations resolution to create a tribunal that will investigate on the shooting of the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine. The tribunal will serve as a prosecution panel to those responsible in downing the plane.
The plane originally is scheduled to fly from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. The plane was shot down on July 17, 2014. The plane went down along with the lives of its 298 passenger. According to the Fox News, Ukraine and the West suspect that the plane was hit by a surface-to-air missile shot by a Russian soldier or a Russia-backed separatist rebel.
President Vladimir Putin pointed that a tribunal will not make sense if the investigation on the incident is still on going. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said that no veto will stand on the investigation and prosecution of the crime. She added that the efforts to deny justice will intensify the pain of the victims.
According to Reuters, the Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said that it is immature to create an international tribunal. He said that Malaysia and the co-sponsors of the effort for a tribunal submitted the draft of the resolution knowing that it would be vetoed.
The site stated that the Dutch Safety Board was requested to finalize its report on October about the cause of the crash. Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine are working together in conducting inquiries in the crash of MH17.
The Security Council demanded that those responsible for the crime should be accountable. The council also demanded that all states should cooperate and exert effort in establishing accountability. The council's demand is enclosed on the resolution they unanimously voted on July 21, 2014.
