Displays at a museum in Sichuan Province, which earned the moniker "ugliest wax museum" from netizens, have caused outrage from celebrities across China.
Chinese stars claim that their unauthorized wax figures were included in the said exhibit.
Additionally, many visitors agree that the displays do not resemble the celebrities they are supposed to depict.
Amid dismal attempts, the figures of popular actresses Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi were the most noticeable in the museum, which is located in the city of Huayingshan. The two wax figures, dressed with old-fashioned sportswear, share very little likeness to the celebrities.
Another standout is the figure of Taiwan singer Jay Chou, who is depicted dressed in a 1980s ensemble, far from anything contemporary.
Spectators share that if they don't look at the names in the plate, they would not recognize who's who in the wax museum.
Meanwhile, Zhang's agent, Ling Lucas, said that the actress will have her lawyers send a letter to the museum, requesting her wax figure to be taken down.
The poorly sculpted figures were made by a former Beijing Wax Museum curator, Zhang Shouxiang. Defending his side, he remarked that it is normal for wax figures to look different from the real persons they try to imitate.
On Weibo, netizens shared various comments about the museum and the stars' reactions. User @Luibaoguai posted, "Don't take yourself too seriously. What if cartoonists portray you in uglier ways? Will you sue them for defaming you?"
"I think the wax figures depict the celebrities without makeup," @Meet-Eskimos quipped.
"How funny! This museum should take the name plates away, and ask visitors to guess who the wax figures are supposed to be. Anyway, thousands of visitors are now flocking to the museum, so the museum is the biggest winner," @Abondoned-swallow remarked.
