JR Smith is a Cavalier again.
The 6'6 shooting guard has finally made his decision and is re-signing with Cleveland after choosing to be a free-agent in the off-season.
Smith announced his decision via his Instagram account on Thursday. His post read:
"Happy to say that I am returning to the Cavs! It's been a long ride this summer but I can say for sure, well worth the wait. When I opted out of my contract, I wanted to understand the landscape of the NBA and where I fit best. The Cavaliers had things they needed to do in order to piece together a championship caliber roster. I ended up deciding that instead of potentially securing a larger deal elsewhere, I wanted to rejoin an incredible organization in pursuit of the ultimate goal, an NBA championship. Thank you to the Cavaliers for making this happen. Can't wait to get started!"
Smith was supposed to receive $6.4 million in the 2015-16 NBA season, but opted for his player option to be a free agent. Some said the decision was mainly because of the contract, as the player wanted a longer and bigger deal with the team.
Notably, Australia Network News recently reported that the Cavs were indeed offering Smith a new contract but for a lot less than $6.4 Million for one year.
ESPN notes that the new deal is worth $10 million for two-years. While it a year longer, it is definitely less than $6.4M a year.
JR Smith will be joining the team's training camp which is scheduled to start by the end of September.
