Kyrie Irving might miss half of the upcoming NBA season. Recent reports reveal that the point guard may return on the hardcourt by early next year already.
The Cleveland Cavalier star suffered a kneecap injury in Game 1 of the 2015 NBA Finals and was out for the rest of the series. Reports reveal that Irving had to undergo surgery to treat his knee fracture, with his recovery set at 3 to 4 months.
While the star has been working on his recovery since June and still has two months to go before the next NBA season kicks off, league sources say it is unlikely he will suit up for the Cavs on opening day.
Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group reveals that Kyrie may be unavailable to play until January 2016.
"Multiple league sources say his rehabilitation is going smoothly, but that the chances are slim of him being in the opening-night lineup against the Chicago Bulls on Oct. 27. One source said he could very well be unavailable up until January," Haynes wrote.
Notably, a status update on Irving's ESPN profile reads that he may be out until January.
The Cavaliers are cautious of fielding Kyrie during his recovery. The team will want the player back when he is at 100% and is at full strength come Playoffs, Haynes noted.
While they will definitely feel the loss of Kyrie who averaged 21.7 points, 5.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season, the Cavaliers will be using more of Matthew Dellavedova and newly acquired Mo Williams, to cover for Irving.
