Informants received more than 2 million yuan ($317,000) in rewards from the Beijing police this year, according to a police spokesperson on Saturday, Aug. 29.
The Global Times reported that more than 1,700 citizens have received cash after providing police with information on activities of criminals in the city.
According to the report, public informants have provided police with more than 720 tips in Beijing's Xicheng District, which helped police expose about 270 criminal acts and detain 340 people. From tips-offs by public informants, 1,000 people in Dongcheng District were questioned or detained by police.
On June 25, in Jiaodaokou, Dongcheng District, police have tracked down a thief after they received a tip-off from residents. The news portal thepaper.cn reported that the man was caught and charged with stealing 1,000 yuan in cash and cigarettes.
"Many members of the public are active in ensuring security in their communities. It is customary for the police to reward those who help officers maintain security and stability," the spokesperson said.
The city has mobilized 850,000 residents to patrol the city to implement security measures ahead of the military parade commemorating the end of World War II on Sept. 3.
Statistics show that in the first six months of 2015, the Beijing police have received more than 1,500 tips from the public about illegal drug use. Out of those tips, more than 240 of have been verified, and more than 260 suspects have been captured as a result.
According to an article in beijing.china.org.cn, the police also received over 800 tips about illegal possession of guns and bombs between March 2014 and May 2015, which led to a crackdown on violence and terrorist attacks.
