Fans of the iconic 1970s Swedish group ABBA and the musical "Mamma Mia!" would be sad to know that the well-loved play and movie could be seen for the last time on stage. "Mamma Mia!" will have a block party on Sept. 12.
The New York Post reports that the party would be held in front of the Broadhurst Theatre in Broadway where the ABBA musical earned more than $600 million from 5,765 performances. The musical has made show producer Judy Cramer one of the wealthiest women in England.
She will be at the party, together with director Phyllida Lloyd and Catherine Johnson who wrote the book for "Mamma Mia!"
Despite speculations that award-winning actress Meryl Streep, the star of the musical's film version in 2008, might attend the closing-night event, the New York Post said she would be on a movie set in an out-of-town location that evening. Also conspicuously absent are the two B's of ABBA, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
After its last run on Broadway, Cramer will make a movie sequel of "Mamma Mia!" even as the film continues to earn money for the lady producer, estimated earning hitting also $600 million. The two lead stars, Streep and Pierce Brosnan are rumored to still play their original role, while possible director is Casey Nicholaw, who megged "The Book of Mormon" and "Something Rotten!"
The musical's first performance in Broadway was in 1999. For the final performance at Broadhurst, majority of the cast of "Mamma Mia" over the 14 years that it ran would show up.
