The Savannah College of Art and Design opened the SCADfash in Atlanta on Sept. 3, Thursday. Reportedly the inaugural exhibition will honor late Fashion legend and couturier Oscar de la Renta who dressed likes elite ladies like Jacqueline Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.
Founded in 1978 by Richard G. Rowan, Paula S. Wallace, May L. Poetter, and Paul E. Poetter, SCAD is a private, non-profit university with locations in Savannah, Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia, Hong Kong, and Lacoste, France. It was 13 years ago since they first opened the SCAD Museum of Art on its Savannah campus.
A 10,000-square-foot fashion museum showcases haute couture creations from SCAD's permanent collection and limited edition ensembles designed by the world's top fashion houses.
According to scad.edu.com, SCADfash features a public gallery space, a fashion conservation lab and a media library for educational film and digital presentations. The museum will host international fashion exhibitions, films and lectures for students and the public.
According to WWD, SCADfash's opening show, entitled "Oscar de la Renta," will celebrate the late designer and feature creations from the mid-1960s through the present. De la Renta died of complications from cancer on Oct. 20, 2014, at the age of 82.
Exhibition also included some designs from the brand's new creative director Peter Copping. This exhibit will also show the film "Ovation for Oscar." The movie premiered during Cannes Film Festival.
On Sept. 15, Rizzoli will publish a book by the same title that was written by André Leon Talley. Talley curated the Savannah exhibition.
SCAD Museum of Art, opened in 2002 but was expanded and re-launched in 2011. It attracts more than 40,000 visitors every year.
The SCAD Museum of Art has won a 2013 Excellence in Preservation Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and a 2014 American Institute of Architects National Honor Award for Architecture.
Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of SCAD museums and exhibitions, is planning impending SCADfash shows.
