The Class of 2016 is loaded with great point guards-perhaps one of the richest classes at that position in years. But they may not have the best.
Recently, Dennis Smith, Jr, considered as the top point guard of 2016, committed to North Carolina State. Frank Jackson, a combo guard, committed to Duke but there are still point guards like De'Aaron Fox and Kobi Simmons. There are 5 point guards classified as 5 star recruits in 2016.
But do they have the best? CBS basketball's John Rothstein believes they don't, as Trevon Duval, a prospect in the Class of 2017 may trump them all. He tweeted that "Trevon Duval is the best PG in HS bball regardless of class. Changes directions better than anyone. Handle is tighter than tight."
An extensive article on Sports Illustrated also focused on that question of Duval being the best point guard in high school, and also the best overall prospect of the class of 2017.
In the summer's Under Armour Elite 24, Duval made his case as the best point guard in high school, although it should be noted that Dennis Smith, Jr, the top PG of 2016 is out with an ACL injury and De'Andre Fox went to the Nike event in the Bahamas.
Still, the incoming High school junior impressed all spectators. Duval has garnered comparisons to Derrick Rose because of his explosiveness in going to the basket.
"He's so explosive that he can blow past most defenders without shaking them with a dribble or body feint, but the control he exerts over the ball in tight quarters separates him from other players at his position," SI noted. "Duval's crossover is remarkably compact, and his ability to accelerate out of it can leave defenders with no option other than to commit a foul."
The recruiting site 24/7 Sports brought up the idea that Duval may be the top overall prospect of the 2017 class.
"Not only is Trevon Duval the top point guard in the 2017 class, he might just be the best overall prospect in the class."
SI is hesitant about that: "It's too early to bestow that distinction upon Duval or anyone else; there will be movement atop the class of 2017 next summer as players compete against one another with their grassroots teams."
However, it should be noted that the best point guard of 2016 had the highest rank of 4th overall. Duval could easily rank better than that the way he is playing.
