For the most part, the phablet showdown this 2015 will be dominated by two key players - the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Apple iPhone 6S Plus. Yet another contender has emerged and a capable one at that - China's Meizu Pro 5.
The Meizu Pro 5, according to G4Games, has been peeking out lately under the codename Niux and is being primed up as an alternative flagship. The latest leak about the device suggests of top-notch qualities under the hood, featuring the mighty 64-bit mobile chip from Samsung - the Exynos 7420 SoC.
In using the same main engine that Samsung has deployed with its fifth phablet flagship - the Galaxy Note 5 - it's quite obvious that the Meizu Pro 5 is gunning to shoot down the royalties in the field. There is no denying the China device is ready for a rumble involving the iPhone 6S Plus and the Note 5.
What's in store for would-be buyers? First off, the test drive should be far from disappointing as the Meizu Pro 5 counts on the Exynos 8-core chip architecture that is paired with the 2015 standard of 4GB RAM. That should cover the speed and multitasking concerns.
As for the graphics, a Mali-T760MP8 GPU will be the monster to fire up the device screen that G4Games said has modest specs of 5.5-inch display in 1080p resolution.
The Note 5 is a device with a 2K display resolution so it is way ahead of the Meizu Pro 5 but the latter had shaved off in the screen department it compensated in overall performance. Per the Geekbench testing result obtained by G4Games, the Meizu Pro 5 got the better of Galaxy Note 5.
In the single-core comparison, the Meizu phablet scored 1550 points that bested the Note 5's 1490 points. In the multi-core showdown, the former registered a high 5593 points while the Samsung jumbo phone can only manage 4950 points.
As mentioned, Meizu deliberately designed its 2015 flagship with specs slightly lower than the competition in order to get ahead on areas that really matter. With the Pro 5 display tone down a bit, it is expected too that the device will not only be faster than the Note 5 and 6S Plus but will also last longer in a single charge.
And another going for the Meizu Pro 5 is the likely more affordable sticker price, which is already a Meizu signature. The exact pricing, however, will not be revealed until the September 25 event set by the Chinese device maker, likely to be followed shortly by the Pro 5 release date.
