The live-action animation hybrid "Monster Hunt" has taken the title of being the highest grossing film of all time in the Chinese box office from "Furious 7."
The total box-office sales of "Monster Hunt" has exceeded 2.428 billion yuan ($385.3) as of last Friday since its July 16 debut, according to numbers released by an office affiliated with the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT).
The film is set in a world where monsters and humans coexist. It tells the story of Huba, a baby monster who, after being born to a human male, must stop an all-out monster civil war.
The total ticket sales of "Furious 7" hit 2.426 billion yuan in May of this year, making it the most successful film in Chinese cinemas, until "Monster Hunt" took its place.
This marks the first time in 21 years that a domestic film has set the record for highest overall box-office take in China.
Since mainland China reopened its market to foreign films in 1994, domestic films have generally been outperformed. The title of highest grossing film of all time has long been owned by Hollywood blockbusters.
Analysts anticipated "Monster Hunt" would take the title from "Furious 7" after the film was given an extended run following its great box-office success.
"Monster Hunt" will leave cinemas on Sept. 17.
Earlier in its run, the film already broke several other box-office records. It was the fastest film to reach the 1-billion-yuan mark in the Chinese box-office after only eight days of screening.
