Spotify running mode, which was launched for iPhone users four months ago, is now available as an Android app and provides an alternative to standard playlists. The new software from the music streaming giant uses the smartphone's sensor to track the runner's speed, and then selects songs with tempos that that sync perfectly with the user's pace.
The Running mode only works when users hold their mobile device for a short time or attach it to an armband. It will not function while lying on a treadmill.
Spotify has also made some tracks called Running Originals that function like a virtual DJ. They will provide real-time adjustments to the user's altering running speed, according to The Verge.
Running mode is ideal for certain runners. That includes those who lack the time or propensity to build playlists for their jogs through parks, up stairs, or on treadmills.
In addition to the Spotify Running mode's smart playlists, the company also introduced "shows." The portal allows Spotify uses to watch video clips and listen to podcasts.
Spotify Running mode is part of its vision is to improve the process of discovering music. It was greatly helped by its purchase of The Echo Nest in 2014, according to Venture Beat.
The company has also launched initiatives that have earned mostly positive reviews. They include Discover Weekly, which automatically creates playlists of songs that are based on the user's past listening habits.
Spotify was launched in 2008 and is headquartered in London and Stockholm. It now has over 75 million active users.
