The third movie in the "Death Note" franchise has been confirmed, with a tentative release date to 2016. Dubbed as the "forbidden sequel," the film is a follow up to the two earlier live action films "Death Note" and "Death Note: The Last Name."
According to Rocket News 24, the film will be all about L's successor. For the first time the Six-Note Rule will be included in the movie, which, until now has only appeared in the original manga created by Tsugumi Ohba. The rule states that only up to six Death Notes may exist simultaneously in the human world.
The trailer for "Death Note 2016" was released last Sunday after the Japanese TV series ended. Anime News Network revealed that the story is set in the present day, where global cyber-terrorism is rampant. The outlet also shared that new cast members, successor of Light and detective L will emerge to wage a war over six Death Notes on Earth.
The movie will be directed by "Library Wars" and "Gantz" director Shinsuke Sato with Warner Brothers given the distribution rights.
This will be the fourth movie based on the best selling manga, including a spinoff centered on L. It did not come as a surprise that the producers gambled on another film, considering that the first two movies earned $70 million (8 billion yen) in the box office.
Meanwhile, the "L change the WorLd" spinoff was reportedly the 10th highest grossing film of 2008 in Japan. It was released in 127 countries after its Japan release.
