The 2008 film "The X-Files: I Want To Believe" saw Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) living together, but the upcoming Fox science fiction will return next year when the two love birds have split.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Chris Carter dished on what fans should expect from the separation, and the significance of the highly awaited follow-up series in terms of the storyline.
Concerning the manner in which the couple's split will emerge in six episode miniseries, Carter said, "We do it in an interesting way. We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie."
It is unfortunate for fans that Scully and Mulder will not reunite at the end of the revival.
Informing fans at Pittsburgh's Wizard World Comic Con, Duchovny pointed out that in the beginning of the six episodes, there is some sort of alienation.
Duchovny added, ""[But I] don't know where it's going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode ... It's yet to be determined."
When asked about whether "The X-Files" will be back for more seasons next year, Duchovny told Entertainment Weekly that he will be ready to do another cycle. He expressed his uncertainty of doing a 20-episode version of the show, but acknowledged that Gillian and hi are open minded on what will happen thereafter.
"The X-Files" revival debuts on Jan. 24, Sunday, on Fox, immediately after the NFL's NFC championship games.
