Google has essentially confirmed that the Nexus 2015 flagships will be unveiled September 29 and two devices will be unboxed afterwards - the 5.2-inch LG Nexus 5 2015 or Nexus 5X and the bigger Huawei Nexus 6 2015 at 5.7-inch or Nexus 6P.
Rumors say the phablet Nexus is the more premium variant, which likely explains the 6P labelling. It is possible too that the Huawei Nexus is the pricier model but it could prove as the better buy. But if price is not an absolute matter, here are the reasons to pick the second Nexus 6 over the repurposed Nexus 5:
Premium design and build
The Nexus 5 2015 has been reported as more of a sub-flagship smartphone. It is said that Google's chief motivation in providing the handset is to come up with a pure Android that is quite capable without breaking the bank. In short, it is affordable compared to the Huawei Nexus 6.
But in rolling out a budget phone, cutting corners must be implemented and that will be apparent with the new Nexus 5 build and design. Reports indicate that plastic is the dominant material for the device that likely will cost no more than $350.
The new Nexus 6, on the other hand, is believed to be an upscale device inside and out. It is mostly metal-clad with premium front glass panel. The overall finish is worthy of tussling with the likes of Apple iPhone 6S Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
Superlative specifications
The headline specs of the Nexus 5X comprise of the hexa-core Snapdragon 808 with 2GB of RAM. The shooting prowess is the combo of 12MP sensor on front and 5MP on rear. The list is far from mediocre but when compared to the phablet Nexus, the smaller Nexus will easily appear as overwhelmed.
Firing up the Nexus 6P is the duo of 8-core Snapdragon 810 with 3GB of RAM - a combo of an engine that can measured up with the best out there. And the camera system is a killer as well - bannered by 21MP main shooter and likely 8MP on the secondary cam.
In the battle of the specs, the supersized Nexus will readily shoot down its smaller brother.
Higher storage option with possible memory expansion
But really the deal-breaker for the Nexus 5 2015, according to Android Police, is the likelihood that it will unpack in only two storage configurations - 16GB and 32GB, which these days will be quick to fill up. And the chance is almost nil that a memory card slot will part of the smaller Nexus package.
True to its Nexus 6P name, the handset will roll out in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, the latter matching the same editions of Apple's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Now since Google has a refreshed view on extra storage space with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow arrival, it is not too remote that the Huawei Nexus 6 2015 on release date will boast of a microSD slot, Android Police added on its report.
