For the first time in the show's six -season history, HBO's "Game Of Thrones" won a record-breaking 12 awards at this year's Emmys in Los Angeles.
"Game Of Thrones" took home the best drama series award besting nine other contenders, including AMC's "Mad Men". The show won a record-breaking 12 awards from its 24 nominations, the most any series has won in a single year, EW reported.
The previous record holder was "The West Wing" which won nine awards at the 2000 Emmys.
It was the first time since it began in 2011 that "Game of Thrones" had won the best drama series award. Its other accolades, Outstanding Writing for David Benioff and Dan Weiss, Outstanding Directing for David Nutter, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage.
HBO fantasy drama series has attracted record numbers of viewers on HBO and obtained an extremely extensive international fan base. It has received widespread acclaim from critics.
The series has won numerous awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series for its first five seasons, two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series - Drama, three Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in both Long Form and Short Form, and a Peabody Award.
Among the ensemble cast, Peter Dinklage has won two Emmys and a Golden Globe, the Scream Award and the Satellite Award for his performance as Tyrion Lannister.
The first season of "Game Of Thrones" was nominated for thirteen of the 2011 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. It won two, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Main Title Design. In 2012, the second season won six of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Host Andy Samberg noted that the 67th Emmys coincided with the 67th birthday for George RR Martin, whose series of fantasy novels "A Song of Ice and Fire" are the basis for "Game Of Thrones". Martin was in the audience to accept the best wishes and was onstage for the big win.
