After a hiatus of four months, ABC's hit comedy series "Modern Family" season 7 returned on Sept. 23 with its trademark witty jokes and fresh appeal.
"Modern Family" season 7 episode 1, titled "Summer Lovin," began a month after season 6 has ended when Haley (Sarah Hyland) rushed off to the beach to stop Andy (Adam Devine) from proposing Beth. It appears that she has just watched in vain Andy going down on one knee.
The opening shot of "Modern Family" season 7 premiere episode shows Mitch (Jesse Taylor Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) fretting over bills when Cam tells their daughter that from now on, "mother-daddy" will go out to earn while Mitch will stay at home and take care of her. Cam also suggests him to pursue his hobby and do the odd chores around the house till the time he is free from his job.
Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) are trying to cheer up Haley who is still moping over the lost love and proposes to go for a movie.
Meanwhile, Jay (Ed O'Neil) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) are out looking for pre-schools for their toddler when they are told that there is a significant waiting list for the admission. Phil and family are going for a movie when Haley stumbles upon an old acquaintance and ditches her parent to go out coffee with him.
The episode takes a leap of one month and shows Mitch deeply engrossed in his new hobby of painting when Cam comes home and complains him about not getting grocery. He plans out to get Mitch his old job and continues to remain supportive while he is jobless.
Meanwhile, Alex (Ariel Winter) and Sanjay are declaring their break-up plan since the two are leaving for different colleges. At the same time, Andy comes over which results in an awkward moment for Haley.
Jay and Gloria are touring another school which believes in mingling kids with nature when their toddler runs off after a rooster. While Jay and Gloria are arguing whether the school is good for the kid or not, their toddler manages to do something drastic with the rooster after which Gloria offers to pay for it.
Andy tells Phil that he need a month-off to plan his wedding after which Caire is again furious that her daughter is not with him and with some silly junkie. The two are still talking how good if Haley had actually interrupted his proposal when Andy overhears them and is devastated to know it.
Another leap of the month and the whole family has gathered for a get-together when Andy makes an appearance, but shocks everyone as he has gained excessive weight over the month.
Jay confronts Mitch and tells him that he is having a mid-life crisis and he should better go find work, then only he will feel better.
Haley confronts Andy and asks whether he still have feelings for her, but the conversation fails badly. Alex decides to give her relationship with Sanjay a chance and the two pledge to work out their long distance relationship.
