Many big questions surround a routine traffic stop on the Shanghai Highway in mainland China.
Traffic police this week nabbed a red cargo truck carrying 12,033 rounds of artillery shells along the highway. The surprising discovery of the dangerous cargo prompted Police to immediately contact the Lichuan City Public Security Bureau, which has now taken over the investigation.
According to police in Lichuan, they spotted the truck, which appeared to be carrying dangerous chemicals, on the Hubei West section of the highway where it is prohibited to transport explosive articles. At a rest area, the police discovered that the truck had two sealed containers with reflective signs which read "explosive articles."
Having already violated a local traffic law prohibiting explosive articles on the aforementioned section of the highway, the police immediately inspected the container and found 236 crates with 12,033 rounds of artillery shells, weighing more than 10 metric tons. The police immediately interrogated the driver who said that he had taken an order from a very large company to deliver the material. The driver said his destination was Jilin and that he had no idea what his truck was carrying.
The police confiscated the truck and contacted the nearby Public Safety Bureau in Lichuan. Further details regarding which "large company" ordered the ammunition to be delivered, why it was being delivered in an unmarked cargo truck, what the ammunition was to be used for, or where it came from exactly, have yet to be answered.
