When Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down in the third quarter of their 12-6 win over St. Louis last Sunday after an awkward sack by Rams safety Mark Barron, backup Michael Vick instantly knew his name would be called by head coach Mike Tomlin.
Tomlin did and the former Eagles starting signal caller did not disappoint. He guided the Steelers past his former Philadelphia backup Nick Foles in limited minutes, throwing 5-of-6 for 38 yards with a rating of 93.1, improving Pittsburgh's win-loss record to 2-1.
Vick will get to show his true mantle for a whole game next as he is set to start against division rival Baltimore Ravens on Thursday's Week 4 matchup at the Heinz Field.
Fox Sports reported that the Steelers "made the right call" for signing Vick during the summer as primary backup for Big Ben and the team is set to earn the dividends right now with Roethlisberger expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks because of a sprained MCL in his left knee.
Fortunately for Pittsburgh, MRI tests did not show any tear in the ligaments of Roethlisberger's knee, which means he will still be back this season.
With the starting spot secured with Vick, the Steelers are now looking for a temporary backup aside from two-year pro Landry Jones.
Fansided's Cody Williams suggested that Eagles castoff Tim Tebow could be the best man for the job.
Williams indicated that while there are flaws to Tebow's passing game, not to mention the "media circus" he takes to any team he is with, Tomlin's system is suited for a big, running quarterback like him.
Tebow is miles away from the league of Roethlisberger, but they do have similar qualities of "being hard to bring down" and "being able to throw his large frame around" to gain yards and Pittsburgh could definitely use these benefits until Big Ben returns.
Besides, Vick will take care of the rest while Tebow just spells him from time to time.
