A leaked filing from the Federal Communications Commission unintentionally unveiled the specs of the highly anticipated Roku 4. The leak, aside from providing the specs, also shows a schematic of the upcoming set-top box as well as its release date.
According to Pocket Lint, the FCC has to approve all devices that uses wireless communication technologies before they can be sold in the United States. This means that smartphones, tablets and home devices that requires Wi-Fi connection should comply with FCC standards. In the past, leaked FCC filings have shine some light on some of the most anticipated devices to hit the market.
Based on the FCC filing, the device with a codename 4400X is believed to be the Roku 4. Since FCC is only concerned about wireless protocols, the filing did not show or mention any information about the hyped 4K video output. On the other hand, the Roku 4 sports a Wi-Fi chip that supports 802.11ac connectivity.
The 802.11ac connectivity can carry large amounts of data which many analysts consider as a sign that the Roku 4 will support 4K video streaming.
The FCC filing also reveal that the Roku 4 will support Bluetooth. This could point to a possible Bluetooth remote. There are rumors claiming that the Roku 4 will have gaming capabilities since some of its closest rivals, like the Amazon Fire TV and the new Apple TV, are currently working on that aspect.
According to Digital Trends, the introduction of the Fire TV and Apple TV means that the Roku 4 is just around the corner. In the past, a leaked FCC filing usually leads to the announcement of the device.
