Former Chelsea and now Everton striker Romelu Lukaku had recently expressed his desire to play with Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as he is reportedly looking for an exit from the Toffees this January or at the end of the season.
Months ago, United manager Louis van Gaal had also expressed interest in the 22-year-old Belgian although no deal was pushed through until the summer transfer window closed this September.
Even before Anthony Martial was a target, the 64-year-old Dutch mentor was said to be already looking closely at the Belgium international to add to his attacking options especially when Robin van Persie left for Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe in July.
Upon the departure of Ángel Di María to Paris Saint-Germain before the start of the season, van Gaal's striker needs became more evident and they have struggled in their first few league games before snagging Martial at the deadline.
Lukaku recent comments about playing with Rooney at the Old Trafford should be a welcome sign for van Gaal.
"Wayne Rooney. He really is a good footballer. He's good in the air and knows where the goal is," said Lukaku, as reported by the Daily Express. "We've often played against each other, and nearly played together during Duncan Ferguson's testimonial. Unfortunately, I managed to injure myself and had to pull out. I still regret it to this day."
Lukaku, who is considered as one of the best young strikers in the world right now, may get his chance earlier than he thinks when the winter transfer window opens this January.
Caught Offside noted that the Antwerp native would cost around £30 million to transfer.
