The Telegraph reports that villagers of the Prakasam district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh burned Tirumala Rao for forcibly taking Manu Sagar from a nursery. Rao brought the boy to his house and decapitated Manu and then offered the victim's blood to the Indian goddess Kali.

According to Aboutreligion, Kali is known as the Dark Mother. Indian devotees have a loving and intimate bond with her because of her form as a caring mother despite having a fearful appearance. One of her four arms carry a decapitated head, the other a sickle and the third one a pitchfork associated with the devil.

Rao beheaded Manu it to seek divine power from the goddess, according to the Times of India. Manu's mother sought help from villagers. Rao fled his house but was caught by the mob that lynched him.

The mob then poured kerosene on Rao and set him on fire. While he was burning, Rao pleaded with villagers that because of the divine power he got from Kali, he could bring Manu back to life.

Rao, who is known in Prakasam for his ties with practitioners of tantric rituals, survived the burns and was brought to the hospital where he is being guarded by police, said C. Srikant Lakshman, police superintendent.

When he recovers, Rao would be made to undergo psychiatric examination of his mental condition, said Lakshman. Manu was not his first victim. Rao tried earlier this week to kidnap an 18-year-old girl, while Venkata Rao, his brother, shared that Tirumala had attacked him with a sickle. Tirumala's wife left him because of his history of weird behavior, Venkata added.

Because of lack of authorities in remote parts of India, villagers put the law in their hands. One example is when the village council in Uttar Pradesh ordered in August the rape of two sisters as punishment for the sins of their brother who run away with a married woman from a higher caste.
