Nexus devices from 2013 and up will soon get these new Android 6.0 Marshmallow flavor while the balance of the existing pure Androids will have to make do with Lollipop 5.1.1, a new report said. These Google hero gadgets will join the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei 6P, which rock the latest Android right out of the box.
Confirmed by Google, according to Tech Times, to soon get the Marshmallow sweetness is the Motorola Nexus 6 (also announced by its maker) and its tablet counterpart, the HTC Nexus 9. The actual touchdown timing was not provided but as always the case for Nexus branded devices, the mobile OS in pure form arrives shortly after the official rollout. That reads: very soon.
Lined up too to chew in the freshly-prepared Google candy are the LG-provided Nexus 5 and the Asus-made Nexus 7, specifically the 2013 build. Note that the Nexus 5 was issued at the same time with the Nexus 7. It is expected that these kits will be Marshmallow sweetened at around the same time of its 2014 siblings.
Now while Google's news update will certainly excite the owners of the mentioned devices above, the same is not true with the so-called Nexus legacy phones and tablet users. The tech giant has indicated that the Nexus 7 2012 and the Samsung Nexus 10 will not jump to Android 6. It will be the same scenario for the LG Nexus 4.
This batch of Google-handpicked devices will get stuck to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, meaning no new features and functionalities designed only for Marshmallow will get to their owners. But to serve as a consolation - a significant one at that - Google has committed that the old devices under its umbrella will continue to receive critical security patches and updates.
Still, these Nexus toys will miss out on the new things that Google has unpacked with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow release, chiefly Android Pay that facilitates easy online and wireless payment transaction, Now On Tap that gives quick access to the Google Now digital assistant and Doze that aims to prolong battery life by monitoring app activities and forcing into deep sleep idle apps.
Global rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is set to start October 5.
