In 2004, Yuan was the recipient of the World Food Prize for his breakthrough achievement in isolating the right genetic material and technology to grow high-yielding rice crops.

It was through his pioneering work and tireless dedication that China's rice supply situation turned from a state of deficiency to food sufficiency within three decades of his discovery of the hybrid rice technology.  More than 20 other countries are now using Yuan's hybrid rice technology.

Along with Yuan, an Indian geneticist and a Pakistani human rights activist were also nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

88-year old Swaminathan is the first ancestor of "green revolution" in India. Due to his high-yielding wheat and rice technology, India has received tremendous achievements in eliminating poverty and hunger.

This is the second time Pakistani Malala Yousafzai was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2009, when Yousafzai was 11 years old, she created an online blog where she shared insights into her life and studies. At that time, the Pakistani  government was continuously battling with Islamic extremists and forbade girls from receiving education.

In October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban militants on her way home from school. After her successful treatment in England, she continued the crusade for women's education.
