Despite the entry of new competitors into the scene, Amazon Web Services is still on top of the cloud market according to one of its top executives.
According to Computer World, Amazon Web Services senior vice president Andy Jassy said in a conference in Las Vegas, "The cloud has become the new normal for companies of all sizes. AWS has over 1 million active customers. Those are non-Amazon entities that have used the platform in the last 30 days."
Jassy added that analyst firm Gartner reported that AWS has 10 times more computing power than 14 other cloud service providers combined. According to CNBC, Jassy said that the cloud business is getting more lucrative every day with a projected $7 billion revenue run rate on a trailing 12 month basis.
Many tech analysts were not surprised by the recent claim from AWS. Some analysts said that this new claim means that Amazon is feeling serious pressure being brought by upcoming competition especially from tech titans like Google, Microsoft and IBM. With this kind of pressure, it did not surprise many as to why Amazon is trying to emphasize its current lead in the market.
During the presentation, Jassy flaunted its broad list of AWS customers such as Boeing, Dole, GE, Netflix, Shell and TicketMaster.
GE CIO Jim Fowler spoke during the keynote and highlighted how AWS helped his company in what he calls as the largest transformation it is undergoing in its history spanning 140 years.
GE has tapped the services of AWS in the past four years. The company is planning to transfer more than 9,000 workloads into the AWS cloud platform within the next three years.
