Cara Delevingne has always been straight forward in her opinions but in this telling interview she revealed her struggles with depression and thoughts of committing suicide.
Talking to Rupert Everett for London's Women in the World, the actress shared about her struggles in finding herself and pushing herself too much when she was 15 years old.
This led to thoughts of killing herself and the downhill road to depression. She didn't want to live anymore despite realizing how lucky she was to have her family and friends. She admitted that she wanted the world to swallow her up and she looked at death as the best option.
With the support of her family, she was able to get counseling and slowly crawled her way back. She also started to write.
Delevingne said that writing is what saved her life. Whenever she reads what she has written, it was a different experience for her as she sees somebody else talking to her.
MTV transcribed the poem that she wrote during the time when she was overwhelmed with sadness:
Who am I? Who am I trying to be?
Not myself, anyone but myself.
Living in a fantasy to bury the reality,
Making myself the mystery,
A strong facade disguising the misery.
Empty, but beyond the point of emptiness,
Full to brim with fake confidence,
A guard that will never be broken,
Because I broke a long time ago.
I'm hurting but don't tell anyone.
No one needs to know.
Don't show or you've failed.
Always okay, always fine, always on show.
The show must go on.
It will never stop.
The show must not go on,
But I know it will.
I give up. I give up giving up.
I am lost.
I don't need to be saved,
I need to be found.
The actress also shared her modeling experience and how it felt to go from being unwanted to being everybody's apple of the eye. She recounted those times when she was rejected and told that she wasn't pretty enough or skinny enough.
When Delevingne landed on a Burberry campaign that was when her fame skyrocketed. People whom she have met five times but ignored her suddenly wanted to be with her.
She revealed the ugly side of modeling including young girls being "used" so that they can make it to the industry and the perverse photographers taking advantage of them.
The 23-year-old actress shared that a lot of girls come up to her and tell her that they want to be a model. While it is nice to be one, she would encourage them to dream big like be a president or an astronaut.
Delevingne also revealed her battle with psoriasis and how hard it was to have that illness while being in the modeling industry.
She has since quit modeling and is currently focusing on her acting career, which is something she is passionate about.
The "Paper Towns" star is also busy speaking in different gatherings to help young girls in their battle with depression and struggle with self-esteem.
She said that everyone should embrace themselves for who they are including your faults because those cracks are beautiful parts where the light can shine through.
In closing, Delevingne said that you should be comfortable in your own shoes because you will be in there for a very long time. It's all about accepting yourself for who you are.
