Alex Kurtzman's "The Mummy" film reboot is going to make a pivotal change to its titular character and backstory.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Kurtzman and screenwriter Jon Spaihts have decided to reboot the film with a female mummy. The publication added that this decision would help them to arrive with a film that is unique from its predecessors. It has been added that plans were not definite at this point and they were still thinking over the film's pre-production and casting.
The storyline of Kurtzman's "The Mummy" film reboot presents two options, one that would showcase a female mummy and one that would present a male.
Karl Freund's 1932 and Stephen Sommers' 1999 "The Mummy," as well as Sommers' 2001' sequel "The Mummy Returns," featured a male monster. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the casting, which would happen months from now, would dictate the gender of the monster in the forthcoming film.
Universal Studios had huge plans for "The Mummy's" future, so it was essential to get the film right, as per Cinema Blend. According to the publication, the studio also wanted the film to be the top of a network of monster films, which could include Dracula or Frankenstein. In addition, Marvel had gotten huge success with its films that other Hollywood studios had opted to do its system as well.
Along with Kurtzman and Spaihts, Sarah Bradshaw, Jason Brown, Bobby Cohen, Sean Daniel, Roberto Orci, and Barbara Muscietti, among others, are set to co-produce the "The Mummy" film reboot.
With the project in its early phase of development, exact details on the plot, characters, and cast are yet to be revealed.
Directed by Kurtzman, "The Mummy" film reboot is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on Mar. 24, 2017.
