General Motors is recalling about 3,296 vehicles due to an ignition-switch problem with the affected cars.
Some of the affected vehicles are the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD, the Chevrolet Suburban SUV, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD, GMC Sierra LD trucks, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, and the 2015 GMC Sierra HD truck.
The problem with the ignition switch is that the keys get stuck in the "start" position and more often than not moves into the "accessory" position - creating a situation that can arise in "loss of power-steering assist, power brakes and potentially airbag deployment in certain crashes," wrote Alan Adler, GM's spokesman.
Turning the ignition key may also prove very difficult because the ignition-lock actuator gear appears to have a diameter on the outside that seems to exceed exact specifications.
General Motors acknowledged it is aware of the situation and taking steps to remedy the fault through a global recall of affected vehicles. GM further revealed about five shutoffs have occurred on account of the fault, but no crashes, injuries, or any other accidents have been linked to the ignition-switch problem.
It will be recalled that GM also recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles in 2014 over defective ignition switches, and this recall included the Chevrolet Cobalt among others.
"The issue is different from the Cobalt recall but has the same outcome - the ignition can slip from 'run' to 'accessory,'" Adler wrote.
Auto dealers in Chevrolet and GMC vehicles have been instructed to start replacing faulty ignition lock housing in the recent recall, and the exact date for people to start bringing in their affected cars will soon be announced; but owners are free to contact their dealers or call GMC and Chevrolet customer service lines for more enquiries.
