Manchester United chief Louis van Gaal warned his £25-million summer transferee Memphis Depay that he could suffer the same fates as that of past transfer flops Ángel Di María and Radamel Falcao if he would not heed into the 63-year-old manager's philosophy at the Old Trafford.
ESPN reported that van Gaal's United assistant coach, Ryan Giggs, had already talked to Depay about his "attitude problem" and counselled him to simply abide by what the boss is trying to implement in the squad. However, it was also said that it is up to the 21-year-old winger if he wants to follow the guidance or not.
"Ryan has already given advice to him, but the player is responsible for his own deeds," the Dutch mentor revealed to the media following their 3-0 conquest of Everton last Saturday, a game in which Depay was benched.
"You have to give respect to your team philosophy," he added.
Van Gaal also said that a club "cannot know in advance" if a player would be compliant or compatible enough to its team philosophy before a transfer, which means it is a "wait and see" matter. It was said to be the reason why Di María and Falcao did not succeed with Manchester, they simply did not learn to adapt to the values and beliefs of the organization.
The Telegraph indicated that former Dutch footballer Youri Mulder disclosed van Gaal and other United officials are starting to become "fed up" with Depay's attitude, saying that his "big star" ego is not matching his plays on the pitch.
Depay has managed to score only one goal in eight Premier League matches this season. He also has the lowest shooting and passing accuracy in the club at 44.4 percent and 81.3 percent.
