Ford Motor company recently issued a recall order for 2016 Ford Fusion and 2016 Lincoln MKZ. The recall order was issued after it was discovered that the cars' fuel tanks did not comply with some of the requirements imposed by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS).
According to Consumer Affairs, affected vehicles are the 2016 Ford Fusion manufactured from Sept. 3 to Sept. 13. As for the 2016 Lincoln MKZ, the recall will cover cars manufactured from Sept. 3 to Sept. 12.
The recall was issued in order to fix the problem with the cars' fuel tank. Ford said that the cars ordered to be recalled were fitted with a fuel tank that may have inadequate wall thickness. As a result, the fuel tanks have the tendency to crack in case of crash that could ignite the fuel inside and can cause an even bigger problem. A cracked fuel tank that leaks fuel have a high risk of catching fire.
Moreover, the inadequate thickness of the fuel tank means that it did not comply with the rules imposed by the FMVSS, specifically requirement number 301 which deals with Fuel System Integrity.
Ford Motors will notify owners of the affected vehicles about the recall order. Owner are advice to have their cars checked with their respective dealers. Replacement of the faulty fuel tank is also free of charge.
All affected cars were built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant, according to Michigan Live. As of this writing, no accident or injuries were reported that are related to the issue. Ford will start to recall affected vehicles on Oct. 19.
