Official statistics reveal that courier delivery services in China are flourishing, and the industry is expected to overtake the U.S. this 2014.
In the previous year, more than 9 billion packages were shipped to China, which translates to 61.6 percent of annual growth and makes China's delivery business the world's second largest.
As a result, total revenue from the delivery services increased by 36.6 percent, amounting to 144.17 billion yuan ($23.6 billion), based on statistics the State Post Bureau released.
The current surge in courier delivery services is still expected to grow.
In the first three quarters of 2014, over 10 billion parcels were distributed in China, said the SPB.
With big upcoming events such as the Singles' Day--a shopping bonanza that runs for a whole week starting Nov. 11--along with the spending season of Christmas and New Year, China's courier delivery industry is expected to process more than 12 billion packages before the year ends. This would surpass U.S. figures without challenge by 1 billion.
According to China Express Association's deputy head Li Dehui, shopping websites are one of the most significant sources of growth in courier deliveries.
Li added that the expansion of e-commerce in the rural areas guarantees a fast growth for the courier delivery business in the country.
According to official figures, China's online shopping revenue reached 1.85 trillion yuan last year.
