Facebook is rolling out a new update on its Notifications Tabs for the mobile apps, hoping that will be more useful and easy to use.
The social media giant is evolving into what looks more like a dashboard of stuff on Facebook that user may be interested in. It also acts like a destination for all kinds of information.
The update introduces a new set of "cards" into the space once reserved for the user’s friends' likes, comments, birthdays, and event invitations. Upon the arrival of the update, user will be able to see updates of their favorite sports teams, TV shows, the weather, and news stories. Also, they can see all trending stories from multiple categories and frequently shared stories.
Facebook allows users to customize the notifications with whatever information they want based on their location, according to VentureBeat. If a user have location sharing enabled and Facebook wants to pass along information about nearby businesses that may be interesting to the users, they will most likely receive a notification.
Facebook’s update looks a lot like Google Now, the search giant’s virtual assistant that displays personalised “cards” for the weather forecast, sports scores, the user’s flight itinerary, and more. The company says it has no plans to sell ads in notifications, The Verge reported.
The notification settings selected by users will be kept after the update and they can review and change some of them in the Settings menu. The arrow on the right side of each card will be used to customize the displayed information and at the bottom they can add more cards.
The new notification tab options will be available for Android and iOS versions of the Facebook app in the United States.
