According to a new study conducted by AAA Foundation in the U.S., using voice commands while on driving is more distracting than talking through a mobile phone while on wheel.
According to the study conducted by University of Utah, drivers remained distracted for more than 27 seconds while they try to use voice so as to command dial, to send messages or change music.
Peter Kissinger, CEO of the AAA foundation, stated that such kind of distraction could cause drivers to miss signals, walking pedestrians and other vehicles. The group also tried to find the kind of distraction that was caused due to Siri, Google Now and Cortana. Compared to Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana, Google Now caused the least amount of distraction among the three.
The report also further suggested that voice assistants are usually not error free and this cause even higher amount of distraction. It is said that if a voice command is communicated wrongly, it requires the user to start the whole process all over again. Almost 257 drivers between the age group of 21 to 70 participated in the survey.
Earlier survey was conducted in Sweden, which led to the ban of texting during driving while users were allowed to talk while driving. The U.S. transport and safety department has been long advocating the ban of mobile phone when on drive, and also restrict motorists from using their mobile devices. Also, prohibitions are on track to restrict pilots from using mobile phones while in commercial or on duty flight.
