Australians would enjoy speeds of 1 Gbps by 2020, thanks to a new 5G network that telecoms giants Telstra and Ericsson are building.

Mike Wright, GMD of Networks, disclosed in a blog post over the weekend the successful testing of 1Gbps speed capability "by aggregating together 100MHz of Telstra's spectrum holdings across five separate 4G channels integrated on our commercial end-to-end network," reports ZDNET.

In their wireless 4G testing, the two hit 100Mbps or 1Gbps, reports Gizmondo. They reached that speed using five different frequency blocks, namely: 700MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz and two 20MHz portions of the 2600MHz band.

That speed would be a dream-come-true since the fastest 4G standard on available consumer-level gadgets currently is 600Mbps or Category 11. That theoretical maximum speed is available only on a 4G modem that Telstra sells.

To reach 1Gbps, Telstra used a TM500, a special device designed for hardcore network testing, manufactured by Cobham Wireless. Gizmondo hints that device is not an iPhone, so Aussies who want to enjoy 1Gbps by 2020 should consider trading in their Apple devices for those made by Cobham.

Telstra 4G network provides 94 percent coverage to the Australian market, but it aims to make its service available to 99 percent by June 2017.

Per Narvinger, head of LTE at Ericsson, adds, "With the high pace of innovation in the device and application industry, users expect high-performance coverage and the ability to use their apps anytime, anywhere." He adds that by activating new advanced network capabilities, operators are provided with a more solid and secure network performance.
