T-Mobile has rolled out Binge On, which will support video streaming from various services including HBO, Netflix, ESPN, without using customers' high-speed monthly data caps. It will include a ton of movies, TV shows, video clips, and even Go90 (Verizon) and DirecTV (AT&T). The nationwide wireless carrier plans to add other video services, which could include Google's YouTube and Facebook.
All T-Mobile customers whose data plan include 3GB or higher will be eligible for Binge On. It will be available for customers who have Simple Choice Amped plans on November 15, Sunday. The feature will be rolled out for everyone else on November 19. T-Mobile CEO John Legere unveiled the new feature at a launch event streamed online.
T-Mobile customers who switch on Binge On's virtual toggle switch will have to settle for DVD-quality video, according to PC World. They will have to turn it off to watch HD-quality videos, although Legere argued that 480-pixel resolution is good enough for viewing videos on mobile devices.
In celebration of Binge On's launch, T-Mobile is teaming up with Sling TV to provide Simple Choice customers a 30 percent discount on a 1-year subscription to Sling's "Best of Live TV" service, according to TmoNews. It normally costs $20 per month. The service includes several channels including A&E, AMC, Cartoon Network, ESPN, Food Network, History Channel, TNT, Travel Channel, and others.
T-Mobile's unlimited data subscribers are also getting some freebies. Unlimited 4G LTE customers will get a gratis VUDU movie rental every month in 2016.
Some T-Mobile customers are concerned that Binge On could create net neutrality issues by blocking certain products and websites. However, the wireless carrier has argued it would not because the feature is free, and can be switched on or off.
