Marking the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, the World Family Organization (WFO) opens the 11th World Family Summit in Guangdong Province's city of Zhuhai on Dec. 2.
With the blessing of China's State Council, the three-day summit was held in Guangdong Province from Dec. 2-4 by the WFO in cooperation with the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC).
Themed "Families in Balance: Building the Future We Want," the event was attended by nearly 200 political leaders and representatives from other countries including UN Undersecretary-General Babatunde Osotimehin.
Together with 60 Chinese representatives, the attendees of the summit engaged in plenary sessions and a site inspection as well as round-table conferences with delegates from local government and non-government organizations.
According to the China Daily, discussions were focused on post-2015 development agenda and the Millennium Development Goals, as well as aiding the basic unit of society--the family--to play a critical role in enhancing international development.
At the event's opening ceremony, Vice Premier Liu Yandong of China's State Council greeted the delegates.
The WFO, originally the International Union of Family Organization, is a non-governmental organization founded in Europe in 1947.
Holding a consultative position in some of the United Nations specialized agencies such as the UN ECOSOC, the organization is established to maintain the family's part in the welfare of the society.
Its current headquarters is located in Paris, France, and already has a total of six regional offices in different parts of the world, including North and Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Arab regions.
