Mozilla launched the Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview on Nov. 10. The company also reveal that it is stretching the coverage of its platform that is also available as an app for the Android operating system.
According to Android Central, the Firefox OS 2.5 on Android is an experimental app that will replace several elements of the Android homescreen with Firefox's own web based designs. The app also includes a set of system application that will allow users to make phone calls, send and receive message, emails and it even comes with its own app store.
Regarding its full functionality, Mozilla posted an FAQ on its official blog stating, "As a full operating system, Firefox OS has its own task manager, utility tray, navigation buttons, settings, and more."
"Running on top of Android means that these elements of the operating system may come into conflict with those same system functions on Android," Mozilla added.
What Mozilla is doing with the Android platform is reminiscent of what Google did with Chrome on the Windows 8 operating system. Launching Google Chrome in Windows 8 mode will give users a new Chrome OS interface. This means that users will have the chance to use Google's browser-centric Chrome OS within Windows. A sort of Trojan Horse type of infiltration.
In the case of Mozilla Firefox OS 2.5, it is not an official release since it is still branded as a Developer Preview. This means that people who are technically adept are most likely the only ones who can use it.
For many analysts, releasing Firefox OS 2.5 will give developers the chance to tinker with it and possibly discover and patch some bugs. Regarding its official release, Mozilla said that the platform will debut in the United States in 2016.
