The world's largest container vessel, owned by a Chinese company, has set off on its maiden voyage, according to the Global Times.
The CSCL Globe, owned by China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), departed Shanghai for Europe on Monday.
The container ship is 400 meters long and 58.6 meters wide and has a capacity of 19,100 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container ships, surpassing Maersk Line's 18-000 TEU, which is the former holder of the record for the world's largest container vessel.
The CSCL Globe was built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. and is the first of five such vessels ordered by CSCL, a Shanghai-based shipping company that is listed in both Shanghai and Hong Kong.
The vessel, which has a maximum speed of 43 kilometers per hour, is said to have the capacity to transport 200 million tablet computers on a single voyage.
By contrast to 10,000-TEU container vessels, the CSCL Globe has a reduced carbon emission by 30,000 tonnes, and consumes 20 percent less energy.
CSCL is an affiliate of the China Shipping Group and was founded in 1997.
