Researchers in China have released a report saying that air quality in certain places has negatively impacted the country's tourism, according to a Global Times report.
The 2014 China Tourism Development Report, issued by the Wuhan Chapter of the China Tourism Academy (CTA), was conceived after conducting a poll and calculating the effects of air quality on the respondents.
Studying the proportion of days when air quality met standards, the researchers found that every time the number of such days dropped by one percent, the number of people traveling to China was reduced by 443,550.
Hu Jing, head of the Wuhan Chapter of the CTA and one of the researchers, said that the quality of air in the country has become an important consideration in people's travel plans.
More than 80 percent of the people who responded to the poll by the CTA said that smog would keep them from traveling to a destination.
Meanwhile, more than 70 percent of them said that they would set dates for their travel according to the air quality index.
Furthermore, 90 percent of the respondents said that when they actually travel to a place on dates when the air quality is bad, their mood is badly affected, diminishing their experience.
The researchers behind the report have urged greater action toward the reduction of air pollution in China.
