Checkmarx recently published a report stating that Apple's App store is not safe as it was before. The report also further went on to state that iOS apps have greater chances of security vulnerability compared to that of Android apps.
Critical vulnerability can be defined as one that holds power to directly exploit an app without directly involving a user. Such kind of security threat might result in causing huge damage to an application. Hence, iOS apps being safe compared to that of android apps is just a myth, as suggested by the study.
Amit Ashbel, product marketing manager at Checkmarx, stated that among the iOS vulnerabilities, almost 40 percent were considered to be highly severe or critical compared to that of android. Almost hundreds of application, including banking apps, retail and gaming were tested for the purpose of research. The end result of such test pointed out that even financial applications are not secure and are prone to risk of exploitation.
Interestingly, research also pointed out the fact that most of malware apps were strong enough to release personal information of a user. An example to this can be better understood by taking a closer look on recent reports regarding an app called InstaAgent. This particular app topped the app store charts, but was subjected to removal from the Apple App Store recently.
Reports clarified that the app made use of Instagram user name and passwords of users which was then transferred to a remote server. Also, it published images to user accounts without user allowing the same.
Hence, it is indeed wrong to consider that apple store offers secure applications than that of Android store.
