Tech company Netgear recently announced that it is expanding its Arlo line of security cameras. The newest addition to its family is an indoor security camera dubbed the Arlo Q.
According to Engadget, the new Arlo Q indoor security camera costs $230. Netgear said that it will start shipping the camera in December.
Despite its hefty price tag, Netgear claimed that the Arlo Q's specs justifies its price. The camera can capture videos of up to 1080p resolution. It has a built-in microphone and a speaker which can be used for two-way audio communication. The camera is also fitted with high power infrared LEDs which are useful when recording during the night or in dark areas.
Unlike the first Arlo outdoor camera, which is powered by batteries and only functions when it detects nearby movements, the Arlo Q runs on AC power and is active 24/7. The Arlo Q can be configured to record video when it detects movement or loud sounds. If this happens, the camera automatically connects to a Wi-Fi network and uploads all recordings into the cloud where it will be stored for seven days.
The cloud storage feature is free and supports up to five Arlo Q cameras and a maximum of 1GB data.
In an interview with Tech Hive, Netgear director of product management and smart home Damir Skripic said, "In our market research, we found that the user experience is negative if customer gets the product home and discovers there's an additional fee associated with cloud storage."
The Netgear Arlo Q camera feeds can be accessed through its app which is available on iOS, Android and Web browser platform.
