Typical first-person-shooter games does not possess the capability of being played as a real-time-strategy game since its game engine and physics is designed to be played on a different perspective. "Lamba Wars" proved that belief completely wrong.
"Lamba Wars" is a mod created specifically for "Half-Life 2". It enables players to play the game in a completely different genre. A mod is an alteration of a program code of a video game in order for it to be played and operate in a way completely different from its original design.
The game presents a war between human Rebels and the alien force Combine. "Lamba Wars" follows the same gameplay principles just like a conventional real-time-strategy game. Annihilate your opponent by gathering resources, building a base and creating an army. Experienced players will somehow find some similarity in terms of resource gathering and building style to "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War."
The two playable groups, the Rebels and the Combine, can control armies composed entirely of characters taken from the "Half-Life" universe.
"Lamba Wars" though refreshingly new has its fair share of flaws. The most noticeable of this can be found on the Rebel side where units are too similar from each other and players complain that it is difficult to tell it apart from each other. If the game is zoomed in, each unit's distinct features can be clearly seen but using the default aerial camera view, all the units vaguely look the same.
Another flaw of this mod is that sometimes units find it very hard to reach certain points in the map. This error can be pointed out to the waypoint generation system since the game was primarily designed for first-person-shooter rather than the mods real-time-strategy design.
The mod, which can be downloaded completely for free on Steam, proves to be an excellent alternative game for big fans of "Half-Life".
