On Dec. 19, Friday, in Macao, President Xi Jinping watched an evening gala that marked the 15th anniversary of Macao's return to the mainland.
The Chinese president and first lady, Peng Liyuan, received a standing ovation from the audience, as they were accompanied by Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chief Executive Officer Chui Sai On and his wife, Fok Wai Fun, upon entering the Macao East Asian Games Dome.
The event started off with a performance by the Macao Youth Choir singing "Song of the Seven Sons." The theme of the gala was "Dream of Macao, Heart of China."
The "Song of the Seven Sons" was widely known since Macao Special Administrative Region was formed in 1999. The song and lyrics were composed and written by Wen Yiduo (1899-1946), a famous Chinese poet and scholar.
The performances of the evening highlighted dances and songs that featured the coming together of Chinese and western cultures in Macao, and also emphasized the wishes of the Chinese people for a bright future of Macao and the motherland.
When the presentations were over, Xi got on stage along with Chui, shook hands with performers and sung the "Ode to the Motherland" with the performers.
Xi and Peng also attended the inauguration of the Special Administrative Region's fourth-term government on Dec. 20, Saturday.
