Justin Bieber has openly dissed Taylor Swift in a recent interview. The "Sorry" singer threw shade at Selena Gomez's best friend by saying that he would rather make "real" music than become a hit maker.
Speaking to Billboard, Bieber explained that he used to record songs which he did not like just because his label told him to do so. He added that it had been very difficult to make meaningful, but still catchy, songs without it coming off "cheesy."
This time around, with the "Purpose" album, he shared that it was all about making something inspiring. He shared that his latest songs was all about self-expression. He said that it would be impossible to not get inspiration from his past: both dark and happy, as well as his on-again, off-again relationship with Gomez.
"It makes it real, rather than 'Let's call up Max Martin to write you a hit song.' I want my music to be inspiring," he shared.
According to J-14, Bieber's statement was a slight diss towards Swift, given that Martin co-wrote her hit single, "Shake It Off." Martin has also written multiple songs for other artists such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.
Martin may be good at writing catchy songs, but the outlet pointed out that does not mean that it cannot be inspiring just the same.
Fans of Swift immediately came to her defense. Some pointed out that Bieber was only trying to get more publicity for his album.
"I think we would all be better off if celebs didn't trash each other, if they have a problem they should keep it to them selves," one commented.
